Accessibility statement.
This is a draft. This statement has not yet been reviewed by a solicitor or approved by MSR (Merseyside Ship Repairers Ltd). It describes what has actually been built into the website so far, and what still needs to be done before the site goes live. Nothing on this page should be treated as a finalised or signed-off policy until MSR has reviewed and approved it.
Who this is for
This statement applies to the MSR website (msr.uk.com), run by Merseyside Ship Repairers Ltd, Syren Street, Kirkdale, Bootle, Liverpool, Merseyside, L20 8HN.
We want as many people as possible to be able to use this site, including people who:
- use a screen reader
- navigate by keyboard only
- have low vision or are colour blind
- have a motor impairment and find precise movements difficult
- are sensitive to motion or flashing content
Our target standard
We’re building this site to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). This is a target we’re designing and building against, not a certification — no external accessibility audit or certification has been carried out.
What’s been built in so far
The following accessibility features are already implemented on the site:
- Clear page structure. Semantic HTML landmarks (header, navigation, main content, footer) are used throughout, each page has exactly one main heading, and heading levels run in order without skipping levels.
- Skip link. A “skip to content” link lets keyboard users jump straight past the navigation to the main content.
- Visible focus. Every interactive element — links, buttons, form fields — shows a visible focus ring when selected by keyboard, with at least 3:1 contrast against both light and dark backgrounds.
- Touch targets. All buttons, links, and other interactive controls are at least 44×44 pixels, making them easier to tap accurately on a touchscreen.
- Accessible image gallery. The lightbox used in the image gallery is built with the native HTML
<dialog>element. It traps keyboard focus while open, closes with the Escape key, and can be fully operated by keyboard. - Accessible forms. Form fields use proper
<label>elements, and any validation error messages are linked to their field usingaria-describedby, so screen reader users hear the error alongside the field it relates to. - Decorative video, handled properly. The video in the homepage banner is purely decorative: it’s marked
aria-hiddenso screen readers skip it, it has no audio track, and it does not play at all for anyone with a “reduce motion” preference set on their device. Every other animation on the site is also switched off for reduced-motion users. - Accessible mobile menu. The mobile navigation drawer traps keyboard focus while it’s open and closes when you press Escape.
What’s still outstanding before launch
To be honest about where things stand, the following has not been done yet:
- A full manual accessibility audit, including a keyboard-only pass through the whole site and a screen reader pass (using NVDA and VoiceOver).
- An automated accessibility scan using axe-core to catch any issues the manual checks might miss.
These checks are planned before the site goes live, and this statement will be updated once they’re complete.
