Preston sits roughly 50 to 55 minutes north of our Bootle works, straight up the M6 and M58 — a run that puts our two factories within easy reach of the city for site deliveries, fabricated sections and one-off structural work. It’s not a long haul, and it’s one our wagons make regularly for clients across Lancashire and the wider North West.

What makes Preston a particular fit for MSR’s steelwork isn’t just the drive time. The city is a West Coast Main Line hub, sitting on one of the busiest and most heavily engineered rail corridors in the country. That kind of rail infrastructure — platforms, bridges, gantries, the tunnelling and shoring work that goes with maintaining and upgrading a live main line — calls for structural steelwork built to the tolerances and sequencing that rail projects demand. It’s exactly the kind of fabrication MSR has built its business on: precision steelwork for demanding, infrastructure-grade environments, not just standard portal frames and staircases. Our background in tunnelling and structural steel means we understand the constraints of working near or under a live railway — access windows, load paths, temporary works interfaces — and can fabricate accordingly, whether that’s bespoke steel sections for a bridge strengthening scheme or supports for tunnelling works beneath the city.

Preston’s industrial character adds to this. The old docks at Riversway, once a working port on the Ribble, have been redeveloped over recent decades into a mixed commercial and residential quarter — but the city around it has kept its engineering and manufacturing base, and that base still needs structural steel: extensions, refurbishments, new-build frames, and the kind of repair and reinforcement work that keeps older industrial buildings viable. Between the rail corridor running through the heart of the city and a business community still rooted in manufacturing, Preston generates steady demand for two things MSR does well — rail-related structural and tunnelling steelwork, and general structural fabrication for commercial and industrial builds.

We haven’t published a project we’ve delivered specifically in Preston, and we won’t claim one we haven’t done. What we can offer is straightforward: a family-run fabricator established in 1987, working from 22,000 sq ft across two factories in Bootle, with a track record across the UK and Ireland and more than 500 projects behind us.
