Southport sits about 30 to 35 minutes up the coast from MSR’s works in Bootle, close enough for a straightforward site visit and a straightforward delivery. But the town’s building stock isn’t Bootle’s or Liverpool’s: this is a seafront and leisure town, built around the Victorian pier and its promenade, the wide sweep of the seafront itself, and golf courses like Royal Birkdale, which hosts The Open Championship and draws a global crowd to that stretch of coast every time it’s on the rota. Buildings serving that trade — hospitality units, clubhouses, seafront kiosks and shelters, visitor-facing structures along the prom — call for a different kind of steelwork than a dockside warehouse or a factory extension. The steel has to be seen as well as stand up: canopies over entrances, balustrades, staircases, glazed screens, structural steel that supports a fit-out rather than a production line.
